Boostani, translates from the Swahili language (bustani) to ‘garden’. A garden is a place where life is nurtured. Lois believes that beauty is represented in diverse forms, in a garden, and handmade items capture this beauty and uniqueness.

Sisal is part of the Asparagaceae family and is native to Central America. In the late 1930s, sisal was introduced and cultivated in different parts of the world, including Kenya, different parts of Eastern Africa as well as other Asian countries. In Kenya, sisal can be found in multiple regions, but is specifically known to be in arid areas such as the Eastern provinces of Kenya. Sisal has multiple uses, most commonly, it's used for weaving baskets, making mats, sacks and ropes. At Boostani, we use sisal from local sources and our future goal is to start our own sisal plantation, where we can grow our own sisal and replenish our use.
